Preface to JAISE 12(5)

1.This Thematic Issue

Recent advances in IoT devices and networks have enabled application developers to introduce large-scale solutions in different service domains. Through deploying networks of sensors across an entire field of operation, these solutions gather continuous streams of data which are aggregated and processed in centralized or distributed servers. Monitoring air pollution in cities and water pollution in marine ecosystems are two application domains in which monitoring of environmental factors can lead to policy decision making. In the agricultural field of applications, monitoring the essential attributes of the underlying environment and system such as sun exposure, humidity, and soil nutrients has driven application development for many years so far, while new sensory technologies can provide additional data for deciding about the best time to pick the produce from the fields.

This Thematic Issue presents some of the latest advances in the application of smart environments and ambient intelligence to agricultural and environmental technology. We wish to thank our colleagues Andrés Muñoz (Catholic University of Murcia, Spain), Jaehwa Park (Chung-Ang University, South Korea), Abdul M. Mouazen (Ghent University, Belgium), Josenalde Barbosa de Oliveira (Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil) and Dimitros Moshou (University of Thessaloniki, Greece) for their service in managing this Thematic Issue as Guest Editors.
