Abstract: Computerized information systems are used by a large number of individuals to perform a wide variety of tasks. This paper examines the importance of designing effective human–computer information interfaces. The critical rôle played by the human information-processing and decision-making capabilities and limitations in interface design is reviewed. Several cognitive engineering principles that should guide the design process are outlined. Cognitive engineering solutions are offered which should be utilized to design effective human–computer information interfaces.
