Abstract: Traditionally, US scientists and engineers tend to give less attention to foreign literature in their fields than the actual extent of that literature would suggest to be appropriate. The author looks at this phenomenon in the context of the US aerospace community, with respect to activities by Japanese industry in this particular sector. The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) is involved in various information-transfer programs—including conferences and publications. It has been making an effort to incorporate a strong Japanese element into such programs. The author discusses the practical problems associated with the acquisition and use of Japanese technical material by the aerospace industry, but in conclusion emphasizes the AIAA's commitment to continue its efforts in this regard.
