Abstract: The major value of computer systems in service oriented businesses is to accelerate the processing of tasks to improve the effectiveness of the operating environment to provide a better quality of services. As a newly constructed hospital, we were trying to develop a modern hospital information system (HIS) to facilitate registration processing to provide our patients a better quality of health-care. Simplifying task procedures to reduce manual efforts can save the time of medical staff for serving the patients. A well-designed HIS can not only save manpower but also indirectly improve service quality. The automatic registration system (ARS) consisting of two registration subsystems, namely, the ASR and AVR to be described in this paper, has been successfully implemented in our hospital, the Veterans General Hospital – Kaohsiung, for about a year. Serving thousands of users to make registrations daily, they have won a good reputation from the patients. The design architecture and our developing principle will be described in this paper.
