Abstract: Expert systems (ES) is a growing technology, the importance of which is being recognised by many library and information science (LIS) schools both in the United Kingdom (UK) and in North America. This paper describes the findings of a brief questionnaire survey involving all North American schools to determine the number and nature of LIS schools teaching ES, the nature of ES teaching undertaken, the provision of ES teaching resources, the extent to which ex-students have found employment in the ES field, and the type of research being undertaken in ES. Comparisons between the North American experience and that in the U.K. are given, where appropriate.
