Abstract: An investigation into the role and value of fieldwork in education for library and information science was carried out. The fieldwork programmes at two representative South African universities were evaluated, during which a survey of the cohorts of students in both cases was conducted. By means of questionnaires, logbooks and interviews, the researcher was able to assess attitudes to and learning during the programmes. In this paper the researcher concentrates on the main case selected for study and reports the findings relating to learning during the programme. Based on these findings, recommendations about the design of a fieldwork programme are made.
