Information management education: alliances and alignments

Abstract: Effective education for the management and use of information involves not only the sound education of information professionals in organizational and individual needs, but also the education and orientation of other key personnel towards the importance of information resources and information handling skills within organizations. The real value of information services might be properly appreciated only when other professionals and managers have an understanding of the value of information as a resource and connect that with those who have had education and training in information and library work. This article provides a framework for examining the range and types of programs required to meet those challenges along five dimensions: area of study, faculty and school base, core programs, education of co-professionals and managers. Some approaches which aim to improve the perceived value of the management and use of information to organizations and individuals are outlined.
