Online: in an educational cul-de-sac?

Abstract: This paper discusses the distinctive professional elements in online work and considers whether they are properly dealt with in library schools. The concern is expressed that the focus is too narrowly practical and thereby divorced from established principles of information retrieval. This is seen as a regression to the early days of library education when principle and theory were subordinated to the acquisition of practical skills.
