Abstract: In view of the importance of the teaching staff to the success of any library education programme, this study was undertaken to determine the staff situation in African library schools. The results show that virtually all the schools are understaffed. More staff are specially needed to teach information science and archival studies. The existing staff, however, are well qualified. Though the library schools would welcome expatriates when necessary, these form only about 20% of the staff at present. A more promising solution to the staffing problem is the implementation of staff development schemes. [French, German, and Spanish translations of this abstract can be found on pp. 351–352.]
