Abstract: The roles for information professionals in the future will demand a broad interpretation of professional identity and the ability to span disciplinary, institutional and methodological boundaries. There are, however, no established models on which to base educational planning. The approach adopted here is to consider five roles, felt to be of significance to the information professional, in terms of definition, how they are emerging and current education and training. The roles selected are: information resource management; information counselling; research utilization; social networking and public information dessemination.
