Abstract: This paper looks at the need for strategic planning in the Department of Library and Information Studies at the University of Botswana. This need is being brought about by the changing environment of the Department. A conceptual model of strategic planning is given, and an assessment of earlier departmental plans is outlined. It is noted that the Department has realised that a more proactive approach will have to be assumed in order to meet the challenges of the future and to set a definite strategic direction. The paper outlines in broad terms the preliminary stages of that strategic process which is enabling the Department to glimpse into the future and to formulate a vision of what the prospects may be after the close of 1999. These stages include linking the external environment to decision making, a two step approach resulting in a strategic environmental profile, and a strategic impact profile; conducting an internal vulnerability audit to determine the perceived strengths and weaknesses; and finally, strategic formulation and implementation through the drawing up of a strategic agenda which the Department must consider.
