Abstract: An experimental investigation was undertaken of the wake aerodynamics of a 1/12.81 model of a commercial passenger aircraft. The tests were undertaken in the 3.05 m by 3.66 m working section of a closed-return wind-tunnel. The program made use of laser sheet visualization (LSV) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) in planes, normal to the mean flow, to obtain images of flow-following, seed particles. The images were processed to obtain raw velocity vectors, flow divergence, vorticity, cross-flow …energy and high quality visualizations. Image sequences obtained under identical incident flow conditions were used to conceptualize the variability of principal wake features, such as regions of fluid of high vorticity. Show more

Abstract: National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) successfully launched the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) observatory at 06:27 (JST) on Nov. 28, 1997. The TRMM satellite carries the first spaceborne Precipitation Radar (PR) which was developed by NASDA and Communications Research Laboratory. The PR can measure the horizontal and vertical structure of rain day and night, and over ocean and land. This capability allows scientists for the first time ever to grasp the three-dimensional structure of …rain in the tropics and sub-tropics around the globe. In addition to the PR, the satellite carries four more sensors which were developed by National Astronautics and Space Administration (NASA): the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI), the Visible Infrared Scanner (VIRS), and the Cloud and the Earths Radiant Energy System (CERES), the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS). Abstract: In the winter, the wind system over the Sea of Japan strongly affects the weather of the Japan islands. In this paper, wind distributions over the Sea of Japan during cold-air outbreaks observed by the NASA scatterometer were analyzed. Strong northwesterly to westerly winds of 15 to 20 m/s were observed off Vladivostok and off the Korea Peninsula, respectively. A weak wind region, in which the wind speed is less than 9 m/s, is seen downwind …of the mountains and extends more than 200 km. A strong wind convergence zone was formed in the further lee of the weak wind region. Numerical experiments using a three-dimensional mesoscale model are performed to compare the wind distribution observed by NSCAT. The results show that the simulated winds agree well with those observed by NSCAT except for the intensity of the convergence. Show more

Abstract: The 8th International Symposium on Flow Visualization (8ISFV) was held in Sorrento, Italy, from the 1st to the 4th of September 1998. The Symposium has attracted, by far, the largest number of participants in the history of the meeting. The 313 presented papers were distributed in 65 Technical Sessions which covered a very broad range of topics. At the beginning of each working day, four invited speakers, selected among renewed specialists, addressed Keynotes Lectures in plenary …sessions. Prof. Ronald J. Adrian related on the Decomposition of turbulent fields and visualization of vortices and turbulent momentum transport, Prof. G. E. A. Meier described New optical tools for fluid mechanics, Prof. Hiroharu Kato treated a Research on cavitation mechanism by high-speed video and holographic observations and Prof. Antonio Cenedese reported on the Eulerian and Lagrangian velocity measurements by means of image analysis. During the Symposium three Awards were delivered to outstanding scientists in the field of Flow Visualization, namely: the Ernst Mach Award to Prof. Yoshimichi Tanida, the Leonardo da Vinci Award to prof. Wolfgang Merzkirch and the Asanuma Award to Prof. Wen-Jei Yang. Show more
