The Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine (JPRM): An Interdisciplinary Approach Throughout the Lifespan is designed to parallel the multidisciplinary teams caring for children, adolescents and adults with childhood-onset physical disabilities and complex care needs worldwide. Published quarterly, topics include, and are not limited to, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, spina bifida, limb deficiency, muscular dystrophy, stroke, cancer, developmental delays, and rare disorders. Furthermore, the journal welcomes papers dedicated to pediatric rehabilitation from a global health perspective.
The aim of JPRM is to engage a diverse group of international experts with the goal of providing readers with comprehensive information regarding children and adolescents requiring rehabilitation. JPRM brings together specialists from medicine, nursing, psychology, social work, nutrition, child life, family centered care, and occupational, physical, and speech therapy. For manuscript submissions, authorship involving at least two different specialties is encouraged, although not required, to facilitate a transdisciplinary and collaborative approach. Manuscripts are blinded and peer reviewed including biostatistical analysis. Authors are invited to submit original research, systematic and scoping reviews, guidelines, protocols, care pathways, case reports, book reviews, commentaries, editorials, and dates for future conferences.
Abstract: The purpose of this review is to examine how whole-body vibration can be used as a tool in therapy to help improve common physical weaknesses in balance, bone density, gait, spasticity, and strength experienced by individuals with cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is the most common movement disorder in children, and whole-body vibration is quickly becoming a potential therapeutic tool with some advantages compared to traditional therapies for individuals with movement disorders. The advantages of whole-body vibration include less strain and risk of injury, more passive training activity, and reduced time to complete an effective therapeutic session, all of which are…appealing for populations with physiological impairments that cause physical weakness, including individuals with cerebral palsy. This review involves a brief overview of cerebral palsy, whole-body vibration’s influence on physical performance measures, its influence on physical performance in individuals with cerebral palsy, and then discusses the future directions of whole-body vibration therapy in the cerebral palsy population.

Abstract: PURPOSE: Hemiplegic cerebral palsy (hCP) typically impacts sensorimotor control of the hand, but comprehensive assessments of the hands of children with hCP are relatively rare. This scoping review summarizes the development of hand function for children with hCP. METHODS: This scoping review focused on the development of hand function in children with hCP. Electronic databases (PubMed, PEDro, Web of Science, CINAHL, and SpringerLink) were searched to identify studies assessing hand function in children with hCP. The search was performed using keywords (e.g., “hemiplegia”). An iterative approach verified by two authors was used to select the studies.…Articles which reported quantitative data for children with hCP on any items of a specified set of hand evaluations were included. Measures were sorted into three categories: quantitative neuromechanics, clinical assessments, and clinical functional evaluations. RESULTS: Initial searches returned 1536 articles, 131 of which were included in the final review. Trends between assessment scores and age were examined for both hands. CONCLUSION: While several studies have evaluated hand function in children with hCP, the majority relied on clinical scales, assessments, or qualitative descriptions. Further assessments of kinematics, kinetics, and muscle activation patterns are needed to identify the underlying impairment mechanisms that should be targeted for treatment.

Abstract: Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disability of childhood, but US federal government investment into CP research has historically been under-prioritized and under-funded. This issue was brought to the forefront by the parent advocacy group Reaching for the Stars who partnered with the American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine to create a strong parent/professional partnership. This collaboration has resulted in increased awareness and federal commitment to cerebral palsy. This article highlights the important steps and lessons learned in the continuing journey of federal advocacy for CP research.
Abstract: Academic promotion is desired by many faculty practicing at academic medical institutions, but the criteria for promotion often appear opaque to many physician faculty. In nearly all cases, evidence of scholarship is required regardless of academic track. Academic advancement can be stymied by unclear expectations, lack of protected time to engage in scholarly projects, insufficient evidence of dissemination, and limited guidance, mentorship and sponsorship. In addition to being important for promotion, scholarship is an essential aspect of academic medicine because it helps inform and advance the science. Pursuing academic excellence is an important goal for pediatric rehabilitation medicine faculty members…because it helps advance the care of children with disabilities and the field itself. Pediatric rehabilitation medicine faculty in the clinician educator or clinician leader tracks are encouraged to understand the criteria for advancement, seek out mentorship, scholarize their career ikigai and identify opportunities to demonstrate academic excellence.
