Abstract: With the increasing amount of information in electronic form the fields of Machine Learning and Data Mining continue to grow by providing new advances in theory, applications and systems. Abstract: This paper presents significant advancements in Human Language Technology fostered by Italian researchers in the last years. We report recent results in the following research directions: Distributional Semantics (i.e. the COMPOSES project), Multilingual Word Sense Disambiguation (the MultiJEDI project), Textual Semantic Inferences (the EXCITEMENT project), and Computer Assisted Translation (the MATECAT project). Key aspects that are common to such research initiatives include the fact that they are funded by the European Commission, under different grants, after having passed a very selective international competition; that they are led by Italian researchers, this way showing both the prominent role and the maturity …of the Italian community on the international scene; and that they are currently running, indicating that the research topics of the projects are in the mainstream of Computational Linguistics. Abstract: The Artificial Intelligence & Cultural Heritage (AI & CH) working group was born in 1999 with the aim at promoting various scientific activities to increase a more active collaboration between the sectors of cultural assets and artificial intelligence. The many events (workshops and schools) organized over the years have shown the validity of this group for exchanging ideas and gathering researchers and practitioners from different fields. New applications of informatics and artificial intelligence have provided the opportunity to produce innovative tools for documenting, managing and communicating cultural heritage. For this anniversary we intend to show how some of the most …important methods and techniques of artificial intelligence developed in this area, still represent significant tools for preservation, archiving and fruition of cultural heritage. Abstract: Knowledge representation and automated reasoning are two of the pillars of Artificial Intelligence but, differently from other pillars, they are strictly intertwined. Depending on how knowledge is represented, different types of reasoning can be applied and, on the other hand, new developments in the automated reasoning column fosters new ideas on the knowledge representation side. The Italian community has been always very involved in these fascinating themes, and this is witnessed by the lively group of knowledge representation and automated reasoning (Rappresentazione della Conoscenza e Ragionamento Automatico, RCRA) of AI*IA. In this paper we survey the developments on automated reasoning …in the last 25 years, with particular emphasis on the research of the Italian community and of the RCRA group. Abstract: Artificial Intelligence technologies are growingly used within several software systems ranging from Web services to mobile applications. It is by no doubt true that the more AI algorithms and methods are used the more they tend to depart from a pure “AI” spirit and end to refer to the sphere of standard software. In a sense, AI seems strongly connected with ideas, methods and tools that are not (yet) used by the general public. On the contrary, a more realistic view of it would be a rich and pervading set of successful paradigms and approaches. Industry is currently perceiving semantic …technologies as a key contribution of AI to innovation. In this paper a survey of current industrial experiences is used to discuss different semantic technologies at work in heterogeneous areas, ranging from Web services to semantic search and recommender systems. Abstract: The creation of intelligent robots has been a major goal of Artificial Intelligence since the early days and has provided many motivations to Artificial Intelligence researchers. Therefore, a large body of research has been done in this field and many relevant results have shown that integration of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics techniques is a viable approach towards this goal. This article summarizes the efforts and the achievements of several Italian research groups in the development of intelligent robotic systems characterized by a suitable integration of Artificial Intelligence and Robotic techniques. Abstract: Research on agents, intelligent agents, and multiagent systems (MAS) has been one of the most lively areas in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) field in the last years.
