Abstract: An expert system for water quality control of lakes and reservoirs can be based on AI- and simulation methods. The underlying simulation system by means of the ecological lake model SALMO is handled as a component of the knowledge base of the expert system. By an adequate software architecture the combination of the AI-Language PROLOG and FORTRAN 77 is performed. The expert system is designed for different time horizons of control by using the following methods: (1) Making available information for the operational assessment and control of hazardous impacts on water quality (2) Classification of water quality in relation to uses on the basis of measured and simulated data (3) Analogy conclusions with the help of measured and simulated data of reference waters (4) Consulting the simulation system in order to predict consequences of control policies or of environmental perturbations.
