Note: [2] Bo Sundgren, born in 1946, joined Statistics Sweden in 1968 after completing a university degree in mathematics and related subjects. In 1973 he received a PhD in administrative data processing from the University of Stockholm. His thesis, An Infological Approach to Data Bases, has also been published as a book (Theory of Data Bases). Bo Sundgren has also published a large number of other books and articles, primarily in the fields of data bases, data modelling, and information systems design. In 1979 he was appointed professor of administrative data processing at the University of Uppsala, a position which he combined with his function as head of the EDP systems department at Statistics Sweden. From 1983 onwards he served in a similar way as professor of statistical information systems at the University of Linkoping, and since he is affiliated with the Stockholm School of Economics, Department of economical information processing.
Abstract: An overview of the impact of recent EDP methods development on statistical methodology and survey techniques could perhaps best start with an account of some prerequisites at hand like the advent of low-cost micros and sharply declining costs of computer processing. The current EDP environment, EDP and statistics production, and some future issues also need to be discussed. Both Swedish and foreign experiences are relevant regarding automation, integration of processing operations, and the personal computer revolution. Some serious problems are associated with the extensive use of computing power.
