Note: [1] Bo Sundgren, born in 1946, joined Statistics Sweden in 1968 after completing a university degree in mathematics and related subjects. In 1973 he received a PhD in administrative data processing from the University of Stockholm. His thesis, An Infological Approach to Data Bases, has also been published as a book (Theory of Data Bases). Bo Sundgren has also published a large number of other books and articles, primarily in the fields of data bases, data modelling, and information systems design. In 1979 he was appointed professor of administrative data processing at the University of Uppsala. Since 1983 he combines his function as head of the EDP systems department at Statistics Sweden with a professorship in statistical information systems at the University of Linköping.
Abstract: The problem area of ‘statistical information systems design’ can be discussed on two levels: (i) the individual application system level – how to design a system for a specific branch of statistics; (ii) the nationwide level – how to design one unified statistical information system for a country. The matter was discussed at the ISIS'84 Seminar on the basis of papers from several statistical offices. The new development of a particular software at Statistics Sweden (‘Dirigenten’), trying to cope with the co-ordination of user interfaces, responds to one important aspect of SIS design.
