Abstract: NIAM (Nijssens Information Analysis Method) is a data-oriented approach to information systems design modelling, based on properties of information systems and communication. It uses a Binary Relationship information model, which can be represented graphically by Information Structure Diagrams (ISDs). The relationships between processes and information can be captured by Information Flow Diagrams (IFDs), a recent extension to the NIAM method. NIAM provides a formal language called RIDL (Referential IDea Language) to express these diagrams (IFDs, ISDs) and above that procedural constraints and procedures (i.e. the performance of functions). Information system specifications expressed in RIDL may be compiled making automated documentation, verification and even software generation possible. The practical use of NIAM for the design of statistical information systems at the Central Bureau of Statistics of the Netherlands has given rise to valuable experience in this respect.
