Abstract: Zinc(II) 2-oximinopropionate dihydrate [Zn(PAO)2(H2O)2] was precipitated by treatment of an aqueous solution of zinc sulfate with sodium pyruvate oxime, Na(PAO)·H2O. The product was characterized by infrared spectroscopy, solid-state carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analyses (TGA and DTA). A stepwise decomposition pathway was observed in the TGA trace of this complex. The product produced at each step was investigated by IR, XRD, solid-state, 13C NMR, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM). The crystallite size of the zincite was measured by XRD. Surface area of the zincite was also measured. Furthermore, the structure of the Zn(PAO)2(H2O)2 complex was established for the first time by X-ray single crystal diffraction of suitable crystals obtained in aqueous medium.
