Abstract: The structure of the dimeric tristannoxane [(N3)Bu2Sn(Bu2SnO)2N3]2 has been characterised crystallographically and represents the first structurally authenticated tristannoxane without chelating ligands on every metal. The centrosymmetric dimer adopts a ladder structure in which each tin is five-coordinate. One azide bridges the two sides of the ladder in a 1,l-coordination mode while the other azide is monodentate. Crystal data: space group P-1 (no. 2), a = 9.401 (2), b = 13.651 (3), c = 14.821(5) Å α = 67.47(2), β = 73.96(2), γ = 86.76(2)°, Dcalc = 1.61 gcm−3, observed data = 3800, R = 0.0594.
