Abstract: The demand and supply projections of foodgrain are vital for agricultural policy parameters to ensure future supply–demand balances. Several studies have forecasted foodgrain demand and supply using varied assumptions. Given the sensitivity of these estimates to the assumptions used, there are wide variations in the projections made by various researchers and inferences about the status of food security in the country. The paper synthesizes the empirical evidence on demand and supply projections of foodgrains at 2020 and concludes that the supply–demand balance would not be very comfortable in the country in the near future.
