Abstract: This article presents an economic and financial analysis of the big wine companies in four of the sector’s leading territories: Catalonia, La Rioja, Languedoc-Roussillon and Emilia Romagna. The different sectors are compared over a seven-year period from 2008–2016. Financial indicators are used which are supported by the literature and built using information from the SABI and AMADEUS databases. The article first characterizes the areas under study and provides a review of the literature before going on to present the empirical study with the appropriate constrasts to explain the economic and financial health of these companies representative of the sector and especially their profitability.
