Abstract: The situation of academic publishing is changing. Rises in prices, decreasing libraries' budgets, increasing academic output, and new possibilities of publishing in the digital age correspond to the need of new strategies in publishing. In Germany, recently founded university presses are considered as one response to the challenge. Associated with academic libraries, they support open access publishing and offer print on demand. The workshop was about to explore the role of university presses and open access in present and future academic publishing.
