Abstract: Over the past few years, most universities in the United States have been experimenting with the use of different Internet technologies to support their educational programs. It is widely believed that these technologies will play an increasingly important role in the Universities of the future. We have been experimenting with the use of a number of different technologies in our courses for many different types of educational processes over the past six years. During this period, our use of these technologies has changed a great deal as a result of our experience. We describe how we use three of these technologies in our classes and what we have learnt over the years. The technologies that we have found to be most helpful in specific contexts are bulletin boards, online multimedia lectures and online chat and instant messaging. We present guidelines that will help others who are considering the use of these technologies in their classes.
