Abstract: In this concluding paper, the relevance of LIS education is examined with particular reference to the points made in Ojiambo's presentations. The “oneness” of librarianship is stressed in terms of professional theories and principles that can be applied internationally, although techniques and practices may need to be changed to fit a particular national environment. The concept of professionalism is discussed in detail. This concept should be taught in schools of LIS in terms of the responsibility that information workers owe to the society that they serve. Freedom of information is also stressed. Level of qualifications and the appropriateness of the curriculum are also considered. In conclusion, it should be remembered that overseas students are being educated in an environment that must primarily address the needs of the majority of the students who come from the U.K. Third World students will be challenged to apply the principles and theories learnt in the U.K. to their home situations – but surely this is part of the educational process.
