Abstract: There is concern in Europe that the legitimate use of technologies to protect intellectual property could be detrimental to the protection of data of individuals. There is an increasing gap between the protection of individuals in the off-line and on-line worlds, especially considering generalized tracing and profiling of individuals. The EU Working Party on Protection of Individuals with Regard to Protection of Personal Data has prepared a document that calls for development of technical tools offering …privacy compliant properties and more generally for a transparent and limited use of unique identifiers, with a choice option for the users. Further, it is concluded that investigations undertaken by copyright holders must be performed in a clear legal framework, especially as to the information that can legally be collected, and to the enforcement powers that can be attributed to these actors. Abstract: This is an assessment of progress that has been made in European Union countries to introduce eGovernment in public services. It results from a study conducted by Capgemini under the Commission's eEurope 2005 program. The study focuses on online availability and sophistication of 20 public services, 12 for citizens and 8 for businesses. However, the study does not measure actual use of these services or the impact on cost or time savings.

Abstract: "The American IT infrastructure is highly vulnerable to premeditated attacks with potentially catastrophic effects," concluded the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) in a new report Cyber Security: A Crisis of Prioritization. "This infrastructure encompasses not only the best-known uses of the public Internet – E-Commerce, communications and Web services – but also the less visible systems and connections of the Nation's critical infrastructure such as power grids, air traffic control systems, …financial systems, and military and intelligence systems. The growing dependence of these critical infrastructures on the IT infrastructure means that the former cannot be secure if the latter is not." The PITAC is appointed by the President to provide independent expert advice on maintaining America's preeminence in advanced IT. PITAC members are IT leaders in industry and academic with expertise relevant to critical elements of the national IT infrastructure such as high-performance computing, large-scale networking, and high-assurance software and system design.
