Abstract: We proposed a multi-agent system for enhancing the intelligent transportation system (ITS) with traffic delay compensation ability. There are three kinds of agent to participate in this mechanism, namely, Travel Center Agent (TCA), Vehicle Agent (VA), and Road Side Agent (RSA). The main function of TCA is to cooperate with VAs to make a reasonable and convenient travel contract for the vehicle driver. VA serves the car driver, makes the contract with TCA, and executes the contract to help car driver to go to destination with less wasted travel time. RSA accepts vehicle information from VA, gives a route suggestion to VA, and bases on the information controlling traffic lights to give each vehicle reasonable and fair red light waiting time. We also proposed an approach to compensate the traffic delay caused by accidents. A Driver Compliance Model is developed to maximize the compliance value through the cooperation of the TCA, RSAs, and VAs. Finally, we implement a system prototype to verify the proposed mechanism and experimental results shows that the traffic light control with the proposed mechanism can give less and fairer red-light waiting time than fixed traffic light switching mechanism.
