Abstract: A growing number of companies have started to build interactive tools for business intelligence and analytics. Such software tools generally incorporate information visualization (InfoViz) for the processing and representation of corporate data. This paper investigates the extent to which software for InfoViz in business and business intelligence supports the strategic decision making process. A model for the strategic decision making process is derived from reviewing literature pertaining to an individual's response to organizational change. The decision making model aims to address the key segments of the strategic decision making process and is extended to take into account decision making scenarios governed by varying degrees of problem and social complexity. An attempt is then made to systematically force a sample of InfoViz in business and business intelligence into the segments of the decision making model. It was found that the majority of InfoViz software tools demonstrated a strong preponderance towards supporting the cognitive and planning steps of the decision making process for a limited scope of application scenarios.
